The market town of Meung-sur-Loire where the novel begins!!! 100 miles south of Paris, it has a population of 6,500 and sports a venerable 12th century cathedral and the 12th century Château de Meung-sur-Loire which was once the country residence of the Bishops of Orléans. The town was occupied by the English during the Hundred Years' War - with Jeanne d'Arc fighting in the 1429 Battle of Meung-sur-Loire. This is the market town where a mysterious stranger makes fun of our hero’s horse!!!
