Alexander Dumas may have been the most prolific writer of the French 19th century - competing only with Balzac for sheer magnitude of his creative output - but it was his father, the black general Thomas-Alexandre Dumas who was the great French hero of the Napoleonic period!!! If you think the plot elements of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo are improbable - this book is a must!!! Dumas’ father was born to the French Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie and the Haitian slave Cessette Dumas - he adopted his mother’s name after the French Revolution of 1789 and fought under that name on countless battlefields of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars from the Alps to Egypt!!! His life and adventures are bewildering and thrilling and his biography a total page turner!!! Can’t recommend enough!!! I read it in 2022 before teaching The Count of Monte Cristo - and just reread it while preparing my Three Musketeers posts!!! If you know the plots of both novels - please add this biography to your summer reading list - if not, please wait till the fall - too many spoilers!!!
