UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the Halászbástya - or Fisherman's Bastion - designed in its current Gothic and Romanesque Revival iteration between 1895 and 1902, the architect Frigyes Schulek supervising the construction of the MASSIVE terraces, arches, colonnades, and staircases, with the seven towers representing the seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary in 895 CE. One of the towers is visible in my photo of King Saint Stephen from a couple of days ago!!!
From the bastion - SPECTACULAR views of the Danube, bridges, Parliament, and Pest landmarks - such as the Saint Stephen Basilica!!!
In the next couple of days - Stróbl Alajos’ third masterpiece - the Matthias Fountain in the Buda Castle - and the history of King Matthias and his legendary father - Hunyadi János!!! I’ve been reading so much about them in the past couple of days - I am falling into a 15th century Hungarian historical abyss - which is BOUNDLESSLY stunning!!! More on both when I figure out how to compress the information!!! Oh yes, and we will find out why church bells ring at midday to this day!!!
My photo from a couple of months ago - with the Gothic masterpiece Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle in the background - commonly known as the Matthias Church.
