This painting by Ilya Repin (1844-1930), Russia’s greatest painter, reconstructs the moment when the teen Pushkin recited his poem dedicated to his years at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum at a school exam. Note the venerable man in the red coat who is standing up at the desk, his hand to his ear in order to hear better the declamation of the young poet!!! This is Gavrila Derzhavin (1743-1816), Russian statesman and poet, acknowledging that the laurel crown of poetry is passing on from his generation to Pushkin’s!!! Did I mention Pushkin was a poetic genius?!?!?! I always tell my students that they must learn Russian for one reason only - to read Pushkin in the original!!! His poetry is DIVINE!!!
